Dr. Kitt’s “Take” on Sealants

As of April 2023, studies have shown that dental sealants are highly effective in preventing cavities in children and adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), school-age children without sealants have almost three times more first molar cavities than children with sealants. Research indicates that sealants can reduce the risk of decay in molars by nearly 80% immediately after application and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to four years post-application. Sealants can remain effective for up to nine years, but they need to be checked regularly for chipping or wearing at dental check-ups.

It’s worth noting that while these statistics highlight the effectiveness of sealants in reducing cavities, individual outcomes can vary based on several factors, including oral hygiene practices, diet, and access to regular dental care. Nonetheless, the evidence strongly supports the use of sealants as a preventive measure in dental health care.

So, the TAKE AWAY is sealants are effective in reducing cavities and regular check-ups allow Dr. Kitt to get ahead of any issues that may develop.
