Can you believe that 2021 is almost over? Compared to 2020, this past year has rushed by, and soon it will be 2022! Instead of making a half-baked resolution that you’ll forget about halfway through January, why don’t you consider doing something that is more easily achievable, something that matters. For instance, you could decide to have a healthier smile! This New Year’s Day, consider making one of these resolutions so that you’ll be smiling for many new years to come.

Cut Back on Sugar

It seems everyone wants to lose weight and claims they’ll stop drinking soda or eating sugary, carb-heavy foods. If this is one of your resolutions, then you have another reason to stick with it! These substances are not just bad for your health but also for your smile. Limiting your consumption of these kinds of foods and drinks can help you keep bacteria in your mouth under control and reduce your chances of getting cavities or gum disease.

But how can you actually and successfully change your eating habits in the new year? If you don’t want to end up quitting in February, you need to have a plan. Rather than indulging in processed foods, enjoy fresh fruits or smoothies to satisfy your sweet tooth. However, stay away from dried fruit, which can stick to your teeth and encourage bacterial growth. You don’t necessarily have to cut off sugar completely, but you can make smarter choices in your diet to benefit both your body and your smile.

Floss Every Day

Most people brush their teeth on a daily basis, but flossing is another story. Unfortunately, only about 30 percent of Americans floss every day, and about 32 percent say they never floss. This small habit may appear insignificant at first glance, but it is actually essential for preventing tooth decay and infection.

Within hours after forming, plaque hardens onto your teeth, especially in between teeth and at the gumline. Brushing can only reach so far, and if you’re not flossing, you’re allowing harmful plaque to build up and bacteria to have direct access to your teeth and gums. By taking just a few minutes every day to floss, you can remove plaque before it causes problems for your smile.

Drink More Water

Countless studies have found just how beneficial water is for your body. Not only can it help your heart health but it aids in digestion and many other functions. So just add your oral health to the list of benefits! Water contains no sugar whatsoever, rinses away any residual bits of food or bacteria from your teeth, and neutralizes the acids that cause decay. When you take frequent sips of water, you create a more hospitable environment for your smile!

You don’t have to take on a Herculean resolution. Start with something simple, like one of these resolutions, that you can easily implement into your lifestyle. This time next year, you can look back and feel proud of your efforts for self-improvement in 2022.
